This is the main square of Beşiktaş, a major district on the European side of Istanbul. It sits directly on the waterfront, making it a key transport hub for ferries, buses, and dolmuşes connecting to neighborhoods all over the city. The square is dominated by the large statue of Ottoman admiral Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa, which has become its defining landmark.
While it's not a tranquil park, the square's energy is the main attraction. It's a place to feel the pulse of local life, grab a quick simit from a vendor, and watch the constant flow of people and vehicles. From here, you can easily walk to the Beşiktaş fish market, the old Beşiktaş Çarşı area with its shops and cafes, or hop on a ferry for a spontaneous trip across the Bosphorus.
For the best photos of the Barbaros statue with the Bosphorus behind it, stand on the steps near the ferry dock, not in the middle of the square.
The square itself is flat and paved, but it is a very busy vehicular and pedestrian intersection; crossing roads requires caution.
